Jim Gilliland's Native American River Cane, Bamboo and Wooden Flutes
The cane flutes below are heat treated with a special process to eliminate cracking and then cane fibers are impregnated with lacquer. This process gives a superior sound and exceptional durability. The flutes have up to 5 coats of lacquer and then one coat of Behlen Master Gel.
The wood flutes are made from a single solid piece of wood. The sound and air in chambers are bored on an Engine Lathe set up as a gun drilling machine. The flute is then hand turned on a wood lathe. The lack of glue joints means no glue joints to fail when subjected to moisture or heat. This allows Jim to impregnate the wood fibers with lacquer the same as his cane flutes. This makes a flute that sounds better and is more durable. These flutes are finished with a finish that is far superior to the oil, shellac and polyurethane finishes most flute makers use. Jim's Wood flutes are finished with Behlen Master Gel as the finish coat. Jim has shut down until April of 2011. All flutes shown here have been sold
